"I first lived in Soho in the early '70s and had a studio at
Spring and West Broadway. I showed at Holly Solomon
Gallery across the street. It was there that I met Janis, who also showed with Holly. Every bar and restaurant at that time was an artist hangout, and most of them were staffed by other artists. It was a great, lively community, and the nexus of artistic activity in New York. For Janis and me, it was an education: we both grew up in Soho.
We left New York and went to China, where we created a company to make rugs based on our watercolors, and when we came back, we found that Soho had become the center of design and fashion—there are so many showrooms, and some of the best design products are available here. So part of what attracted us to Soho Mews was the way it draws on both—on the art that has historically been created and shown here, and on the design that's more recently come to prominence.
This is not the kind of project we usually do: we make high end silk carpets, mostly for residential use. But when we looked at Soho Mews we were immediately struck by it. Here it is, in the heart of Soho, and it has a central courtyard: that was real draw to us, too. And the architects told us they wanted something more interesting than you'd find in your average residential condo—something with more imagination, with a clear design edge. That's what we were waiting to hear, and we're bringing everything we know to bear on the project."
