New Museum of
Contemporary Art
New York's newest art landmark. Design for New Museum of Contem-
porary Art at 235 Bowery, New York City. Projected opening late 2007. Design for visualiza-
tion by Sejima + Nishizawa / SANAA. Site photography by Christopher Dawson.
"Soho and the surrounding neighborhoods have an
intimacy and vitality that has attracted creative people for
decades. The artists who moved here pioneered the conversion of light industrial factories into loft spaces, which today provides an alternative lifestyle to apartment living around the world.
As the only art museum downtown for thirty years, the New Museum for Contemporary Art embodies and champions the creative spirit of downtown and its community of progressive thinkers and activists. We welcome Soho Mews and its residents to the community, and to the New Museum where new art and new ideas live.
We hope to expand our community and public by connecting with projects like the Soho Mews, because we believe that good design is a crucial part of the urban fabric in both the public and private spheres. If we are going to build it, why not use the best art, architecture and design available? Other cities have—like Berlin and Tokyo—why not New York? It's heartening to see that this is starting to happen here and that it can pay for itself. More and more people recognize the importance of good design—something that simply did not resonate with the American public twenty five years ago. As they do, both residences like Soho Mews and cultural institutions like the New Museum will flourish."
